Allay Consulting April Newsletter: Hazard Communication Plans
Chemicals in the Workplace
In efforts to remove potential highly contagious COVID-19 and other viruses from surfaces, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends elevated concentration of disinfectants. The higher chemical concentrations are excellent to remove viruses from contaminated surfaces, also keep in mind these chemicals are harsh to work with. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (aka OSHA) requires employers to protect their employees of the associated hazardous of workplace chemicals.
If you have 10 or more employees, OSHA requires employers to implement their “Hazardous Communication Standard”. Under this safety program, employees must be informed of the hazardous chemicals they work with, safe handling procedures, and ways to protect themselves from all hazardous chemicals at the workplace. One major requirement under this standard includes implementing and training employees on a facility specific written “Hazard Communication Plan”. This plan contains information indicating how the OSHA standard will be met, safe chemical handling, chemical labeling, Safety Data Sheets, training, etc. Hazardous Communication includes requirements as simple as labeling a sanitizer spray bottle. More intense aspect involves safe transfil of solvents.
Implementing this plan is extensive but required by OSHA. The first step is confirming the company’s support: management must be completely committed to preventing incidents and ensuring the safety and health of our employees. Need help with implementing OSHA’s Hazardous Communication Standard? We are here to support you and your employees through education, document support and training.
