Selling Dietary Supplements on Amazon

Amazon has become one of the largest sales channels for dietary supplements, but getting a supplement listed on Amazon is no longer simply a matter of having a compliant label and a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Amazon has implemented additional third-party verification requirements for dietary supplements, placing greater emphasis on current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), independent testing, and product quality.

For supplement brands selling, or planning to sell, on Amazon, understanding NSF/ANSI 455-2 and Amazon’s dietary supplement compliance requirements is increasingly important. Allay Consulting is here to support your business endeavors and get your product on Amazon!

What Is NSF/ANSI 455-2?

NSF/ANSI 455-2 is a cGMP certification standard specifically developed for dietary supplements. Although NSF created this standard, other accredited certifying bodies may use the public standard.

The standard provides a framework for auditing dietary supplement manufacturing operations against the requirements of 21 CFR Part 111, while also incorporating additional industry, retailer, and quality expectations.

Certification involves an independent third-party audit of the manufacturing operation and quality systems. It is designed to demonstrate that a facility has appropriate controls in place to consistently manufacture dietary supplements that meet established quality specifications.

The certification is focused on the manufacturing facility and its cGMP systems, not simply the finished product.

Does Amazon Require NSF/ANSI 455-2? Not specifically.

Amazon’s dietary supplement policy requires products to be manufactured in a facility compliant with applicable cGMP requirements, including 21 CFR Part 111 or equivalent, and requires verification by an approved third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization.

Amazon identifies NSF/ANSI 455-2 as one of the accepted cGMP certification programs. Other accepted programs include UL GMP, USP GMP, SGS, Intertek, SAI Global, TGA, SQF Dietary Supplements Food Safety Code, certain GFSI/SSCI programs, and more listed on Amazon’s website.

Therefore, a company does not necessarily need NSF/ANSI 455-2 certification to sell dietary supplements on Amazon. However, the manufacturer must have an appropriate, current, third-party cGMP certification that Amazon accepts.

Why Is This Important for Supplement Brands?

One of the most important considerations is that the cGMP certification generally applies to the facility manufacturing the product, not necessarily the brand owner.

For example, a supplement brand may use a contract manufacturer to produce its products. If that manufacturer does not have an acceptable third-party cGMP certification, the brand may encounter difficulties satisfying Amazon’s documentation requirements.

Before launching a supplement on Amazon, brands should confirm:

  • Who manufactures the finished product?
  • Is the manufacturing facility currently cGMP certified?
  • Is the certification issued by an Amazon-accepted third party?
  • Is the certification current and in good standing?
  • Does the certification cover dietary supplement manufacturing?
  • Does the facility listed on the certificate match the manufacturing facility associated with the product?

cGMP Certification Is Only One Piece of Amazon Compliance

Obtaining an NSF/ANSI 455-2 certificate, and other approved certs, does not automatically mean that a dietary supplement is approved for sale on Amazon.

Amazon’s dietary supplement program also includes product-level compliance verification and testing. Depending on the product and its risk category, requirements can include:

  • Third-party product testing. Products may be evaluated for contaminants, adulterants, and verification of label claims.
  • Label review. Amazon’s program can evaluate product labeling, including whether claims are appropriate and whether the product information complies with applicable requirements.
  • cGMP verification. Amazon requires documentation demonstrating that the product was manufactured at a facility operating under acceptable cGMP requirements.

Annual compliance. Amazon’s program requires ongoing verification rather than treating compliance as a one-time event. NSF states that its Amazon compliance testing and NSF certification services are valid for 12 months and require annual renewal.

What Should Supplement Brands Do?

Before launching, or relaunching, a dietary supplement on Amazon, brands should conduct a compliance review of both the manufacturer and the finished product.

At a minimum, confirm:

  1. The manufacturing facility complies with 21 CFR Part 111.
  2. The facility has current third-party cGMP certification from an Amazon-accepted program.
  3. The cGMP certificate is current and in good standing.
  4. The certificate covers the appropriate manufacturing activities.
  5. The finished product has appropriate testing documentation.
  6. The label and claims have been reviewed for compliance.
  7. The product can satisfy Amazon’s current third-party verification requirements.
  8. Documentation is maintained and renewed as required.

For brands using contract manufacturers, these requirements should be addressed before signing a manufacturing agreement or committing to an Amazon launch date.

The Bottom Line

NSF/ANSI 455-2 certification can be an important component of an Amazon dietary supplement compliance strategy, but it is not an Amazon-specific certification requirement by itself.

Amazon’s requirements are broader: supplement products must be manufactured under appropriate cGMP controls and supported by acceptable third-party verification and product-level compliance documentation. For dietary supplement brands, the takeaway is simple:

  • Don’t wait until Amazon asks for your documentation: Confirm your manufacturer’s cGMP certification, understand the testing requirements for your products, and make sure your quality documentation is ready before your Amazon listing goes live.

As Amazon continues to place greater emphasis on independent verification and product quality, strong cGMP systems are becoming more than a regulatory requirement, they are a critical part of maintaining access to one of the industry’s largest sales platforms.
